Attorneys Jessica Mederson and Joshua Gilliland write the popular attorney/geek blog “The Legal Geeks.” The Legal Geeks have played lawyer on everything from Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dune, Star Wars and anything else “geek.” “The Legal Geeks” was selected for the American Bar Association Top 100 Law Blogs in 2013 and won the popular vote in the “For Fun” category, unseating a two-time winner.
We have covered everything from whether the officers on the USS Vengeance could argue they were just following Admiral Marcus’ orders, to the renter’s rights issues in Magnum PI, to the legality of the Chewbacca Defense.
We pride ourselves on creatively using photos, having guests for our podcasts and addressing legal issues in all the geek culture we love. After all, who hasn’t thought about assumption of risk and wearing a Red Shirt?
Josh & Jess now take notes while watching TV shows such as Almost Human, Sleepy Hollow and Agents of SHIELD. Both Jess and Josh will spot legal issues, research the law on the issue presented and prepare a blog post. Josh has the added step of ordering t-shirts for the TV shows and movies, followed by coordinating a photo shoot that corresponds with the themes in the episode. Josh sets-up a shoot and has models pose in a range of emotions (surprise, anger, questioning expression) to have a database of photos ready for a quick turn around time on preparing a post.
“The Legal Geeks” have had guests appear on vlogs and podcasts, including Magistrate Judge Paul Grewal & New York State Judge Matthew Sciarrino; Olivia Younger on baking tortes and understanding torts; Leslie Crystal on the 2013 Geekie Awards and even a youth pastor to explore the confession issues from The Time of the Doctor.
The Law surrounds us, just like the Force. The Legal Geeks are not afraid to cry, “this is our time” and boldly geek out over science fiction and comic books.
